Injury after injury has put Brenden Campbell’s NHL career on hold for years. Now he’s playing for the Portland Storm and determined to make it stick. Few things in life drive him more than being told he can’t have something he wants, and what he wants most is to prove he belongs. Brenden also wants Rachel Shaw, the cute, little redhead who just got hired as the general manager’s new assistant. But then she went and made herself off-limits, telling him “I don’t date.” Those three words pretty much guarantee that he’ll do everything he can to change her mind. Rachel is changing things up on the fly for her family, moving them somewhere she can be the kind of mom her kids deserve. Allowing anyone else to be in their lives is out of the question, at least until her instincts get back on track. How else can she be sure who to steer the kids clear of? Right now she trusts no one, including herself, and especially not a man like Brenden Campbell. He’s way too handsome and a little bit cocky. Falling for a guy like him is a mistake she can’t afford to make twice.

On the Fly Portland Storm Volume 2 Catherine Gayle Books

I read this book every minute that I could because Catherine Gayle's writing sucked me into the story and characters' worlds nearly immediately! I love Catherine's writing because she isn't afraid to develop her story lines around real, present day sociological issues such as single parenthood and physical/sexual abuse. Yet, she also successfully builds sizzling chemistry between the heroine and hero and makes the reader fall in love with them! It was also refreshing how Catherine had Brandon and Rachel's love really grow before they ended up taking their relationship to the more physical level. The humorous dialogue that is included in this book is also great! I would highly recommend reading this book and also her first book in her Portland Storm series. On the Fly references the first book's storyline and characters a few times, but I think that the reader could understand enough about those characters and their history to not be lost or miss important aspects of the plot of On the Fly if the reader is reading this 2nd book in the series first. Catherine includes some explanatory dialogue/thoughts pertaining to Brandon's sister Dana's history and experiences that occurred in the first Portland Storm book.

Quick Summary
Rachel Shaw would do anything for her kids, including uprooting their life and moving to Portland after tragedy strikes their family. But Rachel is struggling to trust in anyone again after her ex-husband's betrayal and her need to protect her children, especially 8 year old Maddie, is keeping her strung tight. Hockey player Brenden "Soupy" Campbell has been pulled up from the AHL to play with the Portland Storm and he's determined to do whatever it takes to prove he deserves to be there. When he meets the GM's new assistant, Rachel, he's instantly captivated and when it turns out she's just moved into the condo across the hall, he knows it's fate. But can Rachel learn to trust again?

What I Liked
I loved the first in this series, Breakaway, and I thought this was a good follow up though not better. We met Brenden in the previous book and it's nice to have him as the hero here. I really liked his character because he's a just such a nice guy. He's always ready and willing to do anything Rachel needs and watching him fall in love with Rachel's kids, Maddie and Tuck, was great! I liked Rachel, though she spends most of the book very tightly strung. Rachel comes across as such a great mom; she's devastated by what happened to Maddie and trying so hard to make things better for her. Though her protectiveness is through the roof she's doesn't smother Maddie, at least not too much. Though she wants to resist Brenden she's instantly attracted to him and he's determined to help her out when it's clear that she spends all her time taking care of her kids and no time taking care of herself. Catherine Gayle is great at creating a family out of the Portland Storm players, coaches, wives and girlfriends and this is abundantly clear in this book. Gayle's characters are just genuinely nice and caring and regardless of any realism, I love it.

Once again there was a lot of hockey in this one and plenty of set up for future books, some of it tear-worthy. There's also a lot of Jaime "Babs" Babcock and he was just absolutely adorable. Babs is now living with Brenden and being the oldest of 6 boys he's great around kids. Babs friendship with Tuck is so sweet and Babs pretty much steals the show in any scene he's in.

What Needed Work
I completely understand why Rachel is so over the top protective of her kids. I imagine any parent would be this way but when her need to protect them is used for the The Big Fight it just didn't work for me. I don't blame her in any way but something was just not working for me.
This is a story about Hockey and the ups and downs of fights, injuries and relationships. A young mother Rachael from Texas, her children 8year old Maddie and 5 year old Tuck have arrived in Portland Oregon. She is looking for a job and to keep her children safe. Note The writer does no back story as to why she would choose Oregon as a destination. Rachael is on an interview for an office job when she encounters Brendan, a hockey player for the Portland Storm team. Note (She has no office experience at all). The general manger hires her anyway to take over the very busy position of his assistant. Rachael is all of 5 feet nothing and Brendan is 6'4" but he is very attracted to her anyway. ( sorry folks, but this scenario has been so over done by so many writers that it is just sad). There is a back story of how Rachael's ex husband had been jailed for abusing now 8 year old Maddie and the trauma of distrust both mother and daughter have of men. (But the writer still has Rachael involved with Brendan way to quickly to be believable) Brendan's own sister had been raped while she was in college so he can understand why Rachael would not trust him. As a reader I would tell this writer to expand on her back stories to make the tale believable. This is a fairy tale only.
